Borrowing its name from Charles Kingsley’s seminal 1855 novel, Contemporary is bringing a series of hot-topic panel discussions to the West for Contemporary Wine In Design, October 15th. Entitled Westward Ho! these seminars are imbued with as much spirit and reflection as Kingsley’s tale of adventure, the New World and the inquisitive nature of reaching out to new frontiers. Butting in on the design discussion across Western Australia, these lively and heated industry talks put a spotlight on A+D in a wholly new way. Surrounding topics relevant to the disciplines and professions of A+D today, the foci may be West Coast, but the insightfulness is valid worldwide.
Seats are filling up fast for these talks, so be sure to register your attendance via the links below:
Design Democracy: ! or ?
Hosted proudly by the team at Living Edge
Saturday, October 15th, 2:30pm
The way the public perceives design is often very different to how the industry perceives it. This comes as no shock whatsoever. With huge projects like the New Museum or the revamped Perth Stadium on the cards, the design discussion in WA is not in the studio: it’s on the street. What does designing for the public sphere actually mean? Is this the only public? Meanwhile, in Europe, there is heated debate on the designer-side too. With landmark legislation that attempts to finally do away with ‘the replica’, democracy in design has come full circle to include the producer-side as well. When we talk about democracy in design, just how far-reaching are the ramifications?
Want to know who’s weighing-in on the position of democracy in design? Say hello to:
Alec Coles OBE
Alec Coles OBE, CEO of the Western Australia Museum, is at the forefront of the most exciting developments on the cards in WA. At the helm of the New Museum development, he’s helping redefine public architecture and the important role of museums in our social, cultural and political lives. As one of Contemporary Wine In Design’s Official Ambassadors, Alec Coles OBE is a key driver of our local architecture, design, arts and culture community throughout WA.
Peter Lee, HASSELL Director, recently joined the board of directors of FORM as well. An independent, not for profit organisation dedicated to advocating and developing creativity in the state of Western Australia, FORM’s team along with Peter Lee is dedicated to continue building a state of creativity.
One of Contemporary’s favourite local building designers, Sandy Anghie’s entire portfolio is characterised by a high degree of thoughtfulness and responsibility to the sustainability of the design practice. A driver of ecological and socio-economic awareness in A+D, Anghie is helping to define the positive political landscape of tomorrow’s projects and designers.
Andrew Thornton Hick
Andrew Thornton Hick has applied his craft in different mediums from branding and graphic design through to bespoke furniture pieces and limited edition sculptural works. With sustainability and the environment being high on his agenda, Andrew Thornton Hick believes in designing with purpose and integrity across all design codes.
Caon Studio is a modern commercial furniture brand developed from intense research into the evolving needs of modern working life. Helmed by renowned Australian designer David Caon, the Studio’s range is typified by an incredible attentiveness to fitting the working tools to the human, rather than the human to the tools. A champion of the human-centric approach to design, Caon is uniquely positioned worldwide to provide insight into what democratic design practice might actually mean in the professional sector.
Well, he’s the guy behind this whole thing. As Contemporary’s very own editor, David Congram is teaming up with only the best and brightest in Indesign Media and Perth to bring WA the state’s biggest design event: Contemporary Wine In Design!
