Good whisky, like good design, takes patience. The right temperature, the right age, the right taste… there’s a lot to get right during the distilling process, and Whipper Snapper know how to get it right.
Founded by brothers-in-law Alasdair Malloch and James McKeown, Whipper Snapper is Australia’s first dedicated bourbon-style whisky distillery, and is the result of a legendary friendship between two World War II flying aces. “Vic”, a previous neighbour of Alasdair, shared the secrets of an old moonshine whisky recipe given to him by an American pilot he met in Suffolk, England, in 1943.
By unique law, ‘bourbon’ needs to be a product of the United States, so Whipper Snapper has created a bespoke range of spirits styles to be an Australian salute to bourbon, distilled from corn from Kununurra and wheat from a farm near Narrogin.
Whipper Snapper is the result of a 2013 fund raising effort that saw the brothers-in-law secure $500,000 of funding to secure space and the highly precise, top designed distilling equipment, before properly opening distillery doors in 2014.
Like the best designs, whiskey is a drink that’s never out of style, and the guys’ trademark Crazy Uncle Moonshine spirit is a new take on a classic. The moonshine is available alongside the exclusively Australian Upshot whiskey. It’s with these that the duo will be mixing up a few bespoke CWID cocktails at our official After-a-Fair Wrap Party!
